The Department of Biology will be established in mid-2022, resulting from a planned merger of the Departments of Plant Sciences and Zoology. Equality, diversity and inclusivity will be embedded within the core values of the new Department, including in teaching and research, governance structure, HR and recruitment policies, and communications and engagement strategies.
We acknowledge that by not scrutinising colonialism from within the confines of our teaching and research, we would be willingly continuing in a narrative of misrepresentation and inequality. As such, we are committed to embedding discussion and learning - centring around the impact of colonial thought on the history and development of our subject - in our revised Department of Biology curriculum. It is of the utmost importance that a diverse pool of outstanding biologists, both past and present, feature heavily in everything that we do.
